In the News: New Data on CAM use for Insomnia or Trouble Sleeping
A recent analysis of national survey data reveals that over 1.6 million American adults use some form of CAM to treat insomnia or trouble sleeping  according to scientists at NCCAM.

New Research Concepts
At the September 8, 2006 meeting of the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, the Advisory Council cleared three new concepts. These concepts will be developed into research initiatives.

Announcement - Launch of CAM Specialist Library
The National Library for Health Complementary and Alternative Medicine specialist Library (NeLCAM) will be launched at the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital on Monday May 15, 2006. The library will be available at:

Two New Chapters Available for Online Continuing Education
NCCAM has added two new chapters to its Online Continuing Education Series. These chapters cover integrative medicine and spirituality. This free resource is for health care providers and the public to learn more about CAM. Call for Papers - JSIO
The Journal of the Society for Integrative Oncology (JSIO) welcomes authors to submit original research, reviews and commentaries on adjuvant complementary therapies and botanicals in cancer care.
The journal is the official journal of SIO, a non-profit organization devoted to the scientific study of complementary therapies for cancer patients. JSIO is Medline listed and published quarterly.

New Research Concept: Tools and Technology to Measure Adherence and Symptomatology in CAM Research
The National Advisory Council for Complementary and Alternative Medicine has approved a new project concept, which will be released as a request for applications (RFA).  This RFA would stimulate the development of products that would 1) enhance the development of tools to assess adherence of study participants involved in CAM research, and 2) enhance the development of instruments and devices to simultaneously measure multiple dimensions of symptoms related to menopause that are targeted by CAM interventions.

NIH Now Accepting Loan Repayment Applications

As of Friday, September 1, 2006, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has been accepting applications for its five Loan Repayment Programs (LRPs) for Fiscal Year 2007.

The five LRPs offered by the NIH include the Clinical Research LRP, Clinical Research LRP for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds, Contraception and Infertility Research LRP, Health Disparities LRP, and Pediatric Research LRP.

Through these programs, the NIH offers to repay up to $35,000 annually of the qualified educational debt of health professionals pursuing careers in biomedical and behavioral research. The programs also provide coverage for Federal and state tax liabilities.

To qualify, applicants must possess a doctoral-level degree, devote 50% or more of their time (20 hours per week based on a 40-hour work week) to research funded by a domestic non-profit organization or government entity (Federal, state, or local), and have educational loan debt equal to or exceeding 20% of their institutional base salary. Applicants must also be U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or U.S. nationals to be eligible.
